What exactly is Methamphetamine (meth) and Meth Contamination?

Methamphetamine (also called meth or speed) is a man-made very addictive stimulant drug. Even on the first attempt, methamphetamine (meth) is an effective, highly addictive substance that has catastrophic health consequences and may even result in death.

Meth addiction is easy to develop and difficult to overcome. The use and processing of methamphetamine have been almost widespread. According to one government report, as many as one out of every ten homes could be polluted with meth. Living in a house with high amounts of methamphetamine or meth manufacturing chemicals may cause serious health problems. Meth is a toxic, synthetic stimulant drug that can be smoked, injected, snorted, or ingested orally, and is often used in conjunction with other drugs. Meth users can feel heightened euphoria, alertness, and energy for a short period of time. However, meth alters the way the brain functions and speeds up the body's processes to dangerous, if not fatal, stages, raising heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and respiratory rate. Anxiety, confusion, insomnia, agitation, anger, sensory and auditory hallucinations, mood fluctuations, and delusions are also symptoms of chronic meth usage.

Short-term Effects of Meth

Also, tiny doses of meth, or only doing it once, may have negative health consequences, such as:

  • Increased blood pressure and body temperature
  • Faster breathing
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Loss of appetite, disturbed sleep patterns, or nausea
  • Bizarre, erratic, aggressive, irritable, or violent behaviour

Long-term Health Risks of Meth

Even after people avoid using meth, chronic meth use has a number of negative long-term health consequences, including:

  • Permanent damage to the heart and brain
  • High blood pressure leading to heart attacks, strokes, and death
  • Liver, kidney, and lung damage
  • Anxiety, confusion, or insomnia
  • Paranoia, hallucinations, mood disturbances, delusions, or violent behaviour (psychotic symptoms can sometimes last for months or years after quitting meth)
  • Intense itching, causing skin sores from scratching
  • Severe dental problems (“meth mouth”)
